We
decided to make our honeymoon in Southern Germany
at the border to Switzerland, riding our bikes from the Lake Constance
(Bodensee) to the Lake
Königsee.
We did a one-week-tour in August 2007. The cycle route between the lakes sets
out from Lindau toward the Allgäu hills. Tiny villages dot the landscape
between forests and meadows. Offering a view over the Allgäu Alps, the route
goes on to Füssen with its lovely houses. Passing the gorgeous Neuschwanstein
Castle,
Bad Tölz on the Isar, the route continues through the Upper Bavarian
picture-book scenery to Lake
Tegernsee
and on to Lake
Schliersee.
The tour’s final destination is right in the heart of the Alpine countryside of
the Berchtesgaden
National Park:
Lake
Königssee
is truly a crowning finale to a princely cycle tour.
Road conditions: The
route was marvellous and the cycle paths were in very good condition. Some
stretches run across hilly terrain, partly across natural tracks and mostly
car-free. The route is not way marked in both directions, but at least from
Lindau till Schoenau.
Maps: “Bayern erleben auf dem
Bodensee-Königssee- Radweg”, brochure, published by Arge
Bodensee-Königssee-Radweg. Well, this
one is very useful: “Bodensee-Königssee-Radweg”, spiral-bound, map, 1:50,000,
published by Galli Verlag.
Camping: We were on the
very beautiful camping ground in Lindau, which was 7 kms far from the city
centre. It is necessary to make a reservation, mostly the camping grounds are
very popular places in Germany,
mostly taken from the Germans for all the season. For bikers there is always
sympathy and understanding, you get a tiny place, even if the camping ist full.
We did free camping without any problems on the other days, and visited another
camping ground at the lake
Königsee.
Budget: Camping ground: 2
person and a tent about 15-20 euros. You can find in almost all small towns at
least two supermarkets.
