We did this tour in may 2011, during the dry season for both countries. We didn’t get even a drop of rain. The cycle route sets out from Santiago del Chile toward the The Paso Internacional Los Libertadores, also called Cristo Redentor offering a view over the beautiful hills at an elevation of 3500mt, the route goes on west to Mendoza in Argentina with its lovely landscape covered with wineyards. Passing the adventurous Ruta 40, the route continues to Salta and then to the high mountains. We decided to do the Paso Sico, spending a week over 4000mt. with amazing landscape and we finally arrived in San Pedro de Atacama in Chile.
Road conditions: The route was marvellous and they were in very good condition. The car roads are large and there is enough space for bikes on the right side.
Maps: reise-know-how
Camping: We were very surprised to find good and cheap campings almost in every city we have passed through. For bikers there is always understanding, you get a tiny place, even if the camping is full. We did also free camping in the remote areas without any problems.
Budget: Camping ground: 2 person and a tent about 6-8 Euros. You can find in almost all small towns at least one shop with some fresh fruits and vegetables.
